11th March 2011. Appen Inc. (Appen) and the Butler Hill Group LLC (Butler Hill) announced today that they have merged their operations to create a new global leader in linguistic solutions. The combination of Appen’s leadership in the Speech domain with Butler Hill’s expertise in Search and Text Analytics will enable the combined company to offer its clients the most complete and high-quality set of linguistic solutions. The new merged entity will be called Appen Butler Hill Inc.
Appen’s Chief Executive Mr Bill Pulver will be CEO of the combined company and based in the global headquarters in Sydney Australia. Butler Hill’s President and Founder Ms Lisa Braden-Harder will be President of Appen Butler Hill North America and based in Connecticut.
Venture capitalist Anacacia Capital has a stake in Appen. It has two seats on the board, one occupied by Anacacia managing director Jeremy Samuel. “Butler Hill is a terrific fit for Appen. Anacacia is delighted to help this great success story continue to expand its global reach,’’ Mr Samuel said.
The deal will double the size of Appen and should help it form closer links with key clients in the US. Anacacia has been speaking to Butler Hill for over a year and the past two months have been spent in due diligence. The venture capitalists introduced Mr Pulver to the Appen board in July last year. He was then appointed CEO.
With major operations in the US and Australia, and local teams in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa, Appen Butler Hill is a truly global company. It is a very exciting prospect to be able to provide even more optimized solutions to our clients.”
The company has confirmed that day-to-day business is unlikely to change for customers, suppliers and staff in the short term. However, the pooling of resources and expertise will open up further opportunities for providing clients of Appen Butler Hill with the highest quality service and solutions.
